Las Vegas was home to some very disappointed boxing fans on March 26th.The highly anticipated Steve Cunningham-Matt Godfrey Cruiserweight title fight was officially canceled.  Despite numerous attempts on the part of ESPN and others to resurrect the title match, ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights did not show the fight. There has been much speculation on whom or what exactly is the cause of the cancellation.

Sources say there were contract disputes between legendary promoter Don King and ESPN, regarding a “right of first refusal/right to match” contract clause.  Attempts to move the fight to another venue to Chicago were then dismissed by Matt Godfrey’s camp, claiming the fighter missed too many days of training when they first thought the fight may be canceled.

Talk of cancellation never slowed the formidable USS Steve Cunningham.A true champion, Cunningham continued to train and was definitely on board for the change of venue.  Not wanting to waste time, money or this opportunity, Cunningham was more than prepared and ready to rumble.

Due to his cancellation, Godfrey is now dropped from IBF rankings and has lost this chance to fight for the cruiserweight title.  Cunningham will now be taking on Troy Ross, winner of “The Contender”.Angerwear and all of Cunningham’s fans, while disappointed to miss this fight, know that there is still quite a great battle for the title in the future, and are anxiously awaiting.
